Statement by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella at the end of the round of consultations subsequent to the resignation of the Renzi-led Government

I want to thank you all, journalists and news crews, who followed these consultations to constantly keep public opinion informed.

As you saw, I dutifully heard all the voices present in Parliament.

I took note, with attention and respect, of their opinions and of the proposals they put forward.

In the next few hours, I will evaluate what has emerged from these meetings and I will take the necessary initiatives to solve the cabinet crisis.

Our Country needs a fully functional government as early as possible: we have ahead of us obligations, commitments and deadlines that must be met and fulfilled. These obligations, commitments and deadlines are both at domestic, European, and international level.

In these past few days we saw the emergence of the general priority need to harmonise the two laws regulating the election of the Chamber of Deputies and of the Senate, a condition that is indispensable in order to proceed to holding new elections.

Allow me to repeat that, among the most important points, there is the need to support our fellow-citizens struck by the earthquake and to start the reconstruction of their towns.

Lastly, I hope that the political climate might be expressed and achieved through dialogue, as is essential for our democracy, which must be harmonious and constructive.
